Karen Yap, your Trainer says,"I have had many different roles in my life. I started working as sales coordinator in my father’s paper business, and then became a Piano Teacher for adults. A truly rewarding occupation – a heartwarming highlight was helping a gentleman with no experience learn to play and sing a special song to dedicate to his wife who had terminal cancer. Working together for about 3 to 4 months, we did it, and his wife lived to listen to that song … not perfect but the right melody with some reasonable accompaniment. I don’t have a school teaching background, but volunteered for the UNHCR, who took me in as a teacher in Malaysia. I arrived to find a group of mixed ages and abilities and many with zero English. I had no idea what to do . .. I put aside all the materials that I prepared. I wanted to get to know them first, and started playing some games. . . . We laughed and giggled, and gradually got to learn some Maths and simple English over the following weeks. I was born with a severe scoliosis, which was only diagnosed correctly at the age of 19. My first exercise option was to swim regularly, and I knew that I couldn’t let pain stop me from moving. After becoming a mum of 3 , my back pain got worse. I knew getting fit and strong is extremely important for being a mum and I started brisk walking whenever I could. Just 10 to 15 min, and then I met high school friends who made my walks more enjoyable. We decided to do some short fun runs, and even more runs together . . . . and after 10 years , I have now completed 8 Marathons. I know how important exercise is for the body, but it is also so important for the mind. I am dedicated to helping older adults maintain their strength and flexibility to lead their best lives. Group exercise is not only affordable, but it affords great friendships too. I am proud to be the new Owner/Instructor of Wise Women Workouts." |

Sheila Storey, founder of the program comments:

"Wise Women Workouts was born from my own painful realisation that, being on the shady side of 50, I could no longer outrun my daily calorie consumption. My body was strong, but my joints had taken a pounding over the years, and my tendons and ligaments no longer have the elasticity they did in years gone by. I had to make WISER choices in my exercise program, and the most obvious solution was to do more resistance training to improve what muscle I had left. If this was true for me, who is keen to exercise, it must surely be true for women of my generation who are not so keen to exercise.
I decided I’d better make it FUN, or no-one would want to stay with the program, so I devised a set of workouts which challenge your body, your mind, and give you a bit of a giggle along the way. This all began over 12 years ago, and many of our small band of beginners are still regular participants. The group has grown, and the number of sessions I offer each week has increased to fit in with both those who work, and those enjoying retirement.
It has been a joy to watch women improve not only their strength, but their confidence and sense of well-being. The camaraderie within the classes is wonderful . . . and I am thrilled that the women felt the benefits so much, that they asked me to start a group for their men. The Magnificent Old Blokes program began in 2016, and we now have a very dedicated MOB who support each other each week, and always start my weekend off with a lot of laughs.
I am absolutely delighted that Karen Yap has stepped up to take over the business I created, and I know that clients will be in good hands. I wish you all the very best of health and happiness in the years ahead.
