Why Workout With Weights?
Middle-aged women who have never before lifted weights can derive enormous benefits from following a well-planned resistance training program. Menopause can be a challenging time, with fluctuating hormones causing irritability, tiredness, headaches, hot flushes and mood swings long before a woman finally reaches the end of her reproductive years. You can't prevent your menopause, so you may as well learn to manage it, and embrace the changes that are going to take place whether you like it or not.
Sadly, peri-menopausal women are likely to lose around 200 grams of muscle mass each year, (around 3% to 5% per decade). Whilst muscle does not 'turn to fat' we do tend to gain fat because our reduced muscle mass cannot burn all the calories we consume if we do not adjust our diet. After age 50 we are destined to lose 1% - 2% of our muscle mass per year, and unless we take active steps to re-build muscle we face a depressing spiral of weight gain and weakness. |
So now the GOOD news:
You CAN take steps to improve your strength, improve your balance and manage your moods.
Women in their peri-menopause and menopausal years tend to drop regular exercise just at the very time when it is most important for them to consider their own needs. Undertaking a properly designed strength-training program will help you to maintain your muscle. Stronger muscles lead to stronger bones, better posture, better balance, and a higher overall metabolism. Read more under The Tabs relating to Your Trainer; The Program; and When, Where & How Much. And see what some of the current group have to say about the training under News and Reviews. We look forward to welcoming you soon. |
